First aid in Europe

Every year, there are approximately one hundred million medical emergencies in Europe, ranging from cardiac arrests, to traffic accidents, domestic accidents and disasters. Taking immediate action and applying the appropriate techniques during the first critical minutes can make all the difference in saving lives.

This is the reason why teaching first aid to the general public is a primary mission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies. In Europe, the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies train more than 3.5 million people every year, their first aid programmes aim to develop individual and community capacity to cope with emergencies.

Numerous scientific studies have shown that in the case of an accident, the presence of a witness able to act efficiently before the arrival of the emergency services increases the chances of survival of a victim and that there is a direct link between the level of first aid knowledge and the quality of the assistance provided. This is why the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies aim to provide quality first aid training, particularly through the European First Aid Certificates.
